P5 Museum Based Learning

The National Heritage Board is piloting a Museum-Based Learning (MBL) programme in 2020. In collaboration with MOE, the MBL programme in Indian Heritage Centre will be targeted at Primary 5 students who will learn more about Indian culture and the contribution of early Indian settlers.

Under this new initiative, NHB will engage a pool of Museum Educators to lead and facilitate interactive learning experiences for school groups visiting the Indian Heritage Centre. This learning journey to Indian Heritage Centre will complement the National Education and Social School Studies (Primary 5) curriculum.

The Primary 5 students will have the opportunity to come face to face with authentic artefacts, have close observations and be curious about the stories behind them. They will also have the chance to be engaged in in-gallery conversations using inquiry-based learning and visual thinking strategies on the artefacts.

In this pilot programme, the Museum Educators will be facilitating the programme using a learning package which incorporates new approaches in delivering the learning experience at IHC. The multi-sensory learning experience will include story-telling, tactile objects learning, hands-on activities and tours of the museum’s permanent exhibition galleries to enhance the experience of the students at the museum and to support learning in an engaging manner. Students will also get the opportunity to go on a precinct tour to discover the surrounding areas.

This pilot programme is free for participating primary schools and the deliverables for schools are listed below:

a. All teachers are recommended to conduct post-visit activities in school to consolidate and reflect on students’ learning. Teachers are encouraged to share these reflections with NHB

b. Teachers and selected students will be required to complete post-learning journey survey questions and attend a feedback session, if required

c. Photographs/Videos will be taken during the museum visits as part of documentation. Teachers will have to inform IHC if any of the students are not to be photographed.
